Broken Gods

Darren Hennessey
Slot
Slot 3

All life in Creation was destroyed in an inevitable event called The Kali Yuga. A seed (a Rohi) from The World Tree was saved and cast into the Void. That seed eventually found purchase on a lifeless husk of a world and ignited a vital spark of existence. This world came to be called Ayati, which in the old tongue means hope. The promise of the Rohi is that the universe would begin again when the next age, the Satya Yuga, had begun. It's been 500 years since the world woke up, but we're no closer. Many potential gods slept within the Rohi; some fled the world, some grew old and forgotten, but only seven now remain. They are Bhagna Atua, Broken Gods, flawed, incomplete, and unable or unwilling to master their destinies, which are inexorably tied to the fate of Ayati.

These are the seven Broken Gods:

Xibalba, the Forgotten Ghost Queen: Freebooting Aztec barbarian warrior princess advancing toward a struggle with her Destiny. She's the goddess of Victory, Courage, and Strength and absolutely LOVES her life. Legend has it that she ran out of enemies to fight so she defeated her own past in a duel and forced it to yield, years dripping from its wounds, and then she banished it.

Li Qian Shen, the Sly Prince of Chance, also called The Serpent Whisperer: Genial and gracious scoundrel God of Gamblers, Wine, and Sacrifice. He foolishly cheated several old gods at gambling, claiming their tools of power and now he's being pulled in a dozen different directions and struggling with the loss of his own identity.

Ku Kuei Xian, the Immortal Skeleton Man: Saturnine and contemplative God of Misfortune, Hunger, and Temptation, subject to occasional unexpected moments of dark humor, wit, and even charm. He's a Hungry Ghost, trapped by Fate, but in search of a new path towards redemption.

Maalee, a Tender of the Garden: Rishi of the peaceful Jani tribe, Vessel of Mahananda, the Armored Titan who strides the world, and Goddess of Fertility and Magic. Her people are farmers, herbalists, bakers, artists, astronomers, and magicians. They're nomads that cultivate the land and move on after the harvest. Maalee deep down loves her sister Katnevaala, but has a fundamental philosophical argument with her.

Katnevaala, a Tender of the Garden: Warlord leader of the martial Aji tribe, Vessel of Mahananda, the Armored Titan who strides the world, and Goddess of War and Fear. Her people are hunters, soldiers, builders, blacksmiths, furriers, and slaves. They colonize the land with fortresses and redoubts. Katnevaala deep down loves her sister Maalee, but has a fundamental philosophical argument with her.

The Exile, the Broken Maker known as Sunder: Sunder is the Eldest of these New Gods, they are the last of a dozen Makers that faithfully assisted the Creator long before the Angels, before Heaven and Hell took shape or went to war, and before the World Ash took root. When the Creator asked Sunder to do something unspeakable, they refused and were exiled and stripped of their power to Create. They're a force of Mending, Love, and Change in search of forgiveness.

Yevgeni, the Wolf that Tired of Being a Man: A man who turned himself into a wolf and swallowed the Moon because it gave him power, but it's driving him mad and slowly killing him. He lost his true love, who turned into a raven and flew away. He's the God of Animals, Madness, and Chaos.

What do players need to do to prepare for the game

Players will be provided with a link to a document explaining each character, how they relate, and the relevant locations in the world of Ayati. Custom art provided by Claudia Cangini. Cat Game (Friday)

Joe Saul
Slot
Slot 3

Your characters are cats, living with their humans in a superficially peaceful suburban neighborhood. But they are also heroes, defending their humans, fellow cats, and the rest of the world (or at least their part of it) from EVIL THINGS. If they can somehow get out of the house...

Setting: A lovely tree-lined neighborhood on the West side of Ann Arbor, Michigan -- frequent finalist in "Best Places to Live in the US" but always loses points for expensive housing, road quality, and football traffic. Of course, if you're a cat, you don't care about any of that as long as you're fed, have a warm place to sleep, the crows don't steal your food, and the damn demons would QUIT TRYING TO EAT YOUR HUMANS' SOULS.

This game borrows heavily enough from John Wick's "Cat" that I want to acknowledge the debt, but it isn't a straight use of the rules or setting.

IF YOU PLAYED IN THIS GAME AT ACNW, do not sign up for this one. Content will repeat.

What do players need to do to prepare for the game
Pregenerated characters will be supplied before the game. No prior homework is required. I guess if you don't know what a cat is, you may want to look them up. I hear there may be some photos on the Internet.

Dark Warp - The Sundered Worlds

James Arnoldi
Slot
Slot 3

The year is 2470. It has only been three years since the test of a new FTL drive that would warp space to improve travel time had an unexpected consequence. It broke the barrier between our universe and another universe....one in which magic and sorcery were common and technology was unreliable. Now, the DAW Star Corps has a new challenge to keeping peace in the Democratic Alliance of Worlds. Magic has been reawakened and creatures of legend come to our universe. Even old threats, like the Cron Hegemony have a new added menace as old enemies learn to utilize the power of magic.

Thankfully, magic isn't truly new. Some ancient orders kept the teachings of the old ways and in those old practices are the secrets to unlocking the potential that came....from the Dark Warp. With new advisors assigned to the SCS Protector, the highly trained officers of the Star Corps will need all the magical help they can get to unravel the mystery of the Sundered Worlds.

This game is a one-shot set in the early days of the Dark Warp Setting, a setting I've been developing for the KEY RPG system. The Key System is a mechanics-light system that I have been using for games at Ambercons for over a decade. No experience is necessary.

What do players need to do to prepare for the game
Pregens will be provided. I will contact players before the con to ask about character preferences.

Global Frequency - TBD

Tymen
Slot
Slot 3

Are you on the Global Frequency? What is the Global Frequency? Some call it an Urban Myth, some say it’s a Faerie Tale and some call it a world conspiracy. What it is, is a worldwide independent intelligence organization, a rapid emergency response team and a private defense force all rolled into one. They deal with the threats that the world’s governments don’t want you to know about and can't handle themselves. They know trouble's coming before anyone else does. There are 1001 operatives on the Global Frequency, Intelligence Operatives, former Special Ops soldiers, ex-Cops, Scientists, Athletes. If you are an expert in your field, whatever it may be, you could be called on by the Global Frequency. You could be called on to save the world. Wait, hear that, that special ring-tone, you’d better answer it, they're calling you. You are on the Global Frequency.

Global Frequency is a game set in our world and our time. It is a gritty and messed up world, like ours is and you are its protectors. You are the agents of the Global Frequency called upon to stop a catastrophe or clean up the mess after one. Secretly and without fanfare. You handle the situations that no one else can.

What do players need to do to prepare for the game
Character creation rules will be using James Arnoldi's new Key rules. I will send them out. You play experts in your field, examples Scientist, Athlete, Soldier, Detective, etc.... Minor psychic abilities may be allowed, ask me. I would like the character's done at least one week before the Con.

If you've played before you may choose to keep your character or to make a new one. Either way, you have 1 extra points for your character (new or otherwise) and an extra Drama Point over what you already have.

Contact me, if you are interested.

Long Live the God Empress

Dawn Vogel
Slot
Slot 3

The Astral Galaxy has been ruled by the God Empress, She Who Sits Resplendent on the Opalescent Throne, for longer than recorded history remembers—great fat spans of millennia, at least.
You were born into one of the seven hereditary noble houses that form the God Empress’s court. As a member of the galactic aristocracy, yours has been a life of leisure and privilege. You are a fop, a dandy, a rake, a swell, and a toff. You are accustomed to being garbed in the height of fashion, drinking the rarest of libations, attending the most lavish soirees, and experiencing pleasures of dubious morality, virtue, and legality. You are a pampered, preening child born of wealth and luxury.
However, you were trained to be useful—should the need arise. You were not allowed to grow fallow. You were made to practice the arts of war and the arts of black magic. You were educated,
tutored, and made skillful. You were honed, sharpened. You are a tool. You are a weapon.
You were raised as a necro-cavalier of your noble house. You reluctantly or begrudgingly underwent training as both necromancer and cavalier because your elite status comes with an obligation—a duty so sacred your family dare not shrink from it. The God Empress reserves the right to request that the noble houses of her court furnish her with their sons and daughters to serve whatever aims she sees fit. No one can deny the whims of the God Empress.
You have been called upon by the God Empress for a task that will, no doubt, put your life in jeopardy and test your fealty to your noble family and your beloved-slash-feared God Empress. As a
necro-cavalier of the Astral Galaxy, you are honor bound to sally forth as the God Empress wills it.

What do players need to do to prepare for the game
This game uses dice. You have been warned.
The system for this game is Necro-Cavaliers of the Astral Galaxy, a hack of John Harper's Lasers & Feelings. Character creation details and game rules will be provided prior to the game. The character creation details are fairly simple, but I would prefer to have characters in advance of the game.
This game is inspired by Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, but will not follow the canon of those books. You don't need to have read the books to play, but they may provide inspiration.
We will likely play this game via Zoom, with a link provided in advance.

Mumble mumble something about a LARP

Amanda Robinson
Slot
Slot 3

The Long, Annoying Restrictive Pandemic is dead, long live the LARP!

After a year of lockdown, you can finally get together and LARP again, hallelujah!

Players will play two characters:
1) a GM for a LARP that is finally able to run again after a long hiatus.
2) the arch-nemesis (LARP-wise) of another player's GM

What do players need to do to prepare for the game
We'll be using Dave Vandenabeele's Paragraph System, in which you tell me a paragraph about each character, and I ask questions if needed.

Ideally, the players will discuss amongst themselves what sort of LARP they are running and who their nemesises (nemesi?) would be. But if one GM is running an epic fantasy and another is running a space opera, I'll roll with it.

ShadowWorld Conspiracies

Edwin Voskamp
Slot
Slot 3

You work in a Law Enforcement or Intelligence Agency or related (e.g. NYPD, FBI, FEMA, BAFT, etcetera), that could be operating out of the Boston-Washington area. You have seen something unusual, something you could not write up officially and keep your job. Sometime after that you got contacted by a group working underground, asking you to help defend Earth from What Is Out There. Since then you, by yourself, in small cells, have done off the book work for this secret group, while trying to fit it in with the justifiable work of your day job.

What do players need to do to prepare for the game
If you don't have a character for this game that you want to play get at least a character name and concept tot the GM before the game.

The Clockwork Grove

Eleanor Todd
Slot
Slot 3

Summer vacation. For the first time in years, your parents both managed to take two weeks of vacation at the same time. After hours of discussion and good bit of wheedling on your part, your parents made the decision to leave behind the bustle and drone of the city, and make the long drive out to your erstwhile grandparents' manor on an azure lake in the mountains, nestled among redwoods. Despite the many years that have passed, the home still has all its brassy shine, and as you pull up, Sir Whirenclank welcomes your parents, your siblings, and you. Clearly he and the other Automatons have taken good care of The Clockwork Grove.

Note: This game previously ran at Ambercon Northwest 2020. Return play is not recommended.

The game is set in a Miyazaki-esque modern day, located in an area physically similar to the SF bay area.

There's Someone in my Head ... [part 2 of 2 - sign up for BOTH slots 2 and 3]

Simone Cooper
Slot
Slot 3

[Game covers two slots, both 2 and 3. It will start at 1 pm Eastern / 10 am Pacific time and end at 7 pm Eastern / 4 pm Pacific time. You must select both slots to play]

It has been decades since you walked the Amber Pattern. It was exciting at first being called on by the elders to undertake the numerous missions that young Amberites undertake once coming into their powers; but it wasn't long before the excitement turned to tedium as you sorted out the latest mess left over from the boneheaded moves, power-drunk fantasies, petty vengeances, or "innovations" of your elders. You did what any cousin with wit and sense did, you buried your trump deck in a warded box and struck out for the Shadow of your Desires to live in comparative peace.

You have been living a life of quiet adoration ever since! You want for nothing; your every need is tended to by your people; the beings of your Shadow hold you in reverence, even love.

Until lately.

The inhabitants of your Shadow have been behaving progressively more strangely in your presence. Some of your retainers have started avoiding you. Something just isn't quite right. Then you started noticing that things were missing, rearranged, broken, misplaced... and then there were the gaps...

Someone appears to be hijacking your life. The problem is, you think it is you.

[This game was conceived by Stephanie Itchkawich and run previously at AmberCon Northern Ireland 2021. I am running it with her permission.]
